Andy Wang joined Sam Vardas on Schwab Network's Market on Close to break down Delta Airlines' surprising strength amid the U.S./Iran conflict. Here are the key takeaways.
Record Sales During a War
Delta posted 8 of its top 10 sales days in company history this quarter. Five of those came after the Iran war started. Bookings are up 25% year over year.
“When your customers continue buying at higher prices, you can absorb cost shocks,” Andy explained. “Delta isn't just selling seats. They've built a premium brand around first class, business class, lounges, and loyalty perks.”
The Economy Is Bifurcating
The top 10% of earners now account for nearly half of all U.S. consumer spending. Delta has positioned itself to capture that segment.
- Premium revenue has more than doubled in the last decade
- American Express pays Delta $9 billion annually for their co-branded card partnership
- Meanwhile, discount carriers serving budget-conscious travelers are struggling
“So when you hear ‘the consumer is strong,' the question is: which consumer?” Andy noted. “Affluent consumers are spending. Lower and middle-income households are pulling back.”
Delta's Hidden Advantage
Most people don't know Delta owns an oil refinery called Monroe Energy. It helps them hedge against spikes in refining costs, with benefits showing up in Q2 numbers.
Delta generates 55% of the entire airline industry's profits with only 20% of market share. That concentration tells you how uneven this industry has become.
Three Investor Takeaways
- This is a pricing power test. Companies that can pass higher costs to customers without losing them are better positioned. Delta is doing that. Discount carriers are not.
- Monitor wealth concentration. When the top 10% drive half of consumer spending, any decline in their portfolios affects the broader economy.
- Distinguish sector strength from economic strength. Delta's performance reflects wealthy consumer spending and premium pricing power. It does not indicate broad-based economic health.
The economy is increasingly K-shaped, and Delta serves the top of that K.
