Memorial Day

Runnymede

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” — Joseph Campbell

For most Americans, Memorial Day is a time to enjoy family, friends, warm weather, grilling and perhaps a beach. But it is important to remember the reason why we take the day off: to remember those who sacrificed their lives in the military service.

This morning I was walking our dog Coco in our town of Berkeley Heights. Along the main street in downtown, they have banners of hometown heroes from all branches of the military. It didn't truly hit me until I passed a woman that was taking a picture of one of the banners. She said, “That's my son.” You could hear the pride in her voice but also her pain from the loss. After taking the photo she sat in her car for quite some time with tears streaming down her face. It made me reflect on all those serving in the military and those who made the ultimate sacrifice to let us live in freedom in this great country.

At Runnymede, we have several clients who are currently serving or have served in the military. We give them thanks today (and to all those in the service) and hope for peace in the world so no one has to make that sacrifice in the future.
